At the moment, my smartphone of choice is an Apple iPhone 6. I’ve been using iPhones for the past four or so years now and am familiar with its user interface and way of doing things. I will be the first to admit that the iPhone has some negative points. But, for the most part, I’ve been happy using this brand of smartphone.
I will also admit that I use a Windows 8 PC at home. Again, I’m familiar with how everything works and is laid out. I’m at a crossroads as I’m thinking of upgrading to a new smartphone. One model that is tempting me away from the Apple fold is the Microsoft Lumia 640.
The Apple iPhone 6 has quite a lot of features that I like and use each day. But if I were to upgrade to Microsoft’s new smartphone, would it have better features to tempt me away from Apple?
I spent some time researching the specs and features of both models. And I’ve come to the conclusion that I will move over to the Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone. Here’s why:
It’s just like using a pocket version of Windows 8
Unlike its predecessors, the Lumia 640 runs the Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 operating system. There isn’t a hint of Google’s Android or Nokia’s Symbian OS in there at all! I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of either OS (sorry – it’s true)!
For someone like me that uses Windows 8 on a desktop each day, the layout of the operating system makes total sense. Soon, Microsoft will be closely integrating its desktop and mobile OSs under the Windows 10 moniker.
One thing that you might not realize is that it’s possible for apps created for Windows 8.1 to work with the Windows Phone 8.1 OS. It is something we’ll no doubt see a lot more of when Windows 10 gets released.
It has a better battery
The main bugbear for me about my iPhone 6 is its battery life. Now, I’m not someone that spends all day long gassing on the phone or religiously checking my Facebook account. But it seems that no matter how careful I am with my iPhone usage, I always have to charge it on a daily basis!
When comparing specs side-by-side, I read the Microsoft Lumia 640’s battery life information. Out of the box, the Lumia 640 offers 26 hours of talk time, compared to the iPhone 6’s 14 hours.
The Lumia also has a bigger battery – 2500 mAh, in comparison with the iPhone’s 1810 mAh. Oh, and did I mention that it has a removable battery?
You don’t need to buy overpriced data cables
One of the things I use my iPhone 6 for is streaming music via Spotify in the car. It annoyed me that I had to buy an expensive data cable with a micro-USB connector. As standard, the smartphone has a micro-USB cable (rather than Apple’s proprietary Lightning interface).
That means longer or replacement cables won’t cost me a lot of money. As you can see, these are pretty major features to tempt iPhone users like me away from the Apple fold.
