If you’re one of the many UK residents who loves nothing more than performing DIY tasks around your home, you might be interested to learn that your American counterparts are now starting to take things one step further – enter the age of the DIY gadget.

Most of us would never dream of being able to create some of the items listed below, but if you’re good with electronics, and you have a few hours to spare, there really is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to create some really cool stuff. So sit back, relax, and prepare to be amazed!

  1. Robot Mowers. (pictured above) I simply had to start with these because they’re so damn cool, and so damn simple to make. All you need is a battery, a small motor, a blade and some wheels and away you go.

  1. VHS Video Toaster. Yes you read that correctly. Proving incredibly popular amongst DIYers in 2013, the video toaster does exactly what it says on the tin. Who needs boring old toasters anyway, now it’s easy to create a cool product out of your old VHS player by simply following an online guide.

  1. Steam Powered Tank. No, not a full sized tank – that would be silly. These steam powered tanks are seriously desirable and sure to impress all your friends. Again, there are plenty of online video guides, so you should have no trouble constructing this beast.

  1. Fast Food Cup Speaker. For anyone who’s tired of listening to their iPhone through headphones but who can’t afford to pick up some speakers, using a fast food cup is a truly inspiring way of amplifying the sound of your favourite tracks.

  1. Homemade Lightsaber. A quick search on Google will present you with literally hundreds of different guides detailing how to make a homemade lightsaber. Generally, all you’ll need is some basic materials like tubing and glue sticks, but make sure you check your chosen guide first, as some are far more complicated than others.

  1. A Night Bike. I know what you’re thinking; all bikes are night bikes, right? Wrong! Many people are now mixing their paint with luminous elements to make their bike glow – and I mean glow like a carbon rod in a nuclear power plant. This looks jaw-droppingly effective and i’m sure the very idea of it already has you drooling.

  1. Solar Powered Radio. Perhaps slightly more functional than some of the other gadgets on this list, a solar powered radio should definitely be on your “to-do” list. Most are simply constructed out of an old cigarette tin, some wire, and a couple of batteries. The total cost involved is unlikely to rise past £3, so what are you waiting for?

Well, there you have it my friends. If you don’t find any of the DIY gadgets on that list appealing, you’re obviously incredibly boring, so just go home and make sure you’re on the sofa in time for Emmerdale (joke).

Have fun!
